Why “Anybody But Bush” is an Invalid Reason to Vote

Yesterday, I had to make a pitstop at a local mall to make a merchandise return. On the way into the mall, I noticed a bumper sticker that I had noticed several times before, “Anybody but Bush”.

It strikes me that Kerry’s base is not so much enthused by the candidate but by the idea of eliminating the incumbent. To this day, Kerry continues to be a mystery in terms of policy and defining of himself – something that the left doesn’t view as a problem when selecting the most powerful man in the world. But this anomaly has not dissuaded voters in voicing opposition to the current President at a feverish pitch.

The concept of “Anybody but Bush” is a distrubing one. Apparently, my grandmother would make a good President of the United States. And maybe if she was viewed as too old, the homeless guy on the corner of 23rd and E St might do it. After all, these people are not Bush, and so are qualified to be President.

Let’s assume for a brief moment that Kerry were to win the election on Tuesday and inauguration day arrived. The policies of the Bush Administration are out the Windows and a new day in American history begins. What then? What will define the Kerry presidency? What will his domestic agenda achieve? Will there be a departure from the foreign policies missteps of the previous administration?

These questions seem lost on some potential voters. What will Kerry do when North Korea walks away from the table forever, despite bilateral talks? What happens when his “staunch allies” in Europe do not support America like he claims they will? What happens when raising taxes on the top 2% stymies economic growth and pushes the US back into the recession we barely have gotten out of?

The problem with “Anybody but Bush” is it’s too short sighted. That gets America through campaign season and up to November 2nd. It doesn’t address what happens when Bush is no longer a factor.

If a voter wants to vote for Kerry due to agreements in policy, that is great. If a voters wants to vote for Kerry because they feel more secure with him, more power to ya. If a voter wants to vote for Kerry, because he is not Bush, you are making a tragic mistake.

  1. I realize I differ from you on this, Carol, but I do care if anyone reads my blog and if visitors come back. I do however, agree that it’s a personal touch of yourself. But I do actually care if I have readers and what they want. :)

  2. Whoa, that’s awesome. A big win for open source and for people who don’t have much money to spend on computing.

Now, can I get one as a thin-client for my living room to stream my MP3s from the bedroom to the stereo? ;)

  19. I’m more in the camp of “anybody but Kerry”.

I’d rather I vote for the evil I know (Bush) than the evil that is unknown and scarier (Kerry) (which also changes it’s evil direction every 10 minutes depending on who he is pandering too at the moment).

Oh crap. Why’d you have to say that about Mr. Cheney? Jeez. I didn’t want anyone to know I said that. Bleh.

Disclaimer: Melissa is my yappy daughter who does not yet know the meaning of the words “flash card” and “DISCRETION”. AHEM.

  23. Traitor ;)

Actually, I’ve looked at a LOT of Microsoft blogs in the last few months. Eventually, I tend to stop reading most of them either because of too much NDA restricted talk (i.e. the IE blogs) or the fact that they’re getting too personal and not staying on their topics.

The “U” word looks like a pretty cool blog though. I also like the MSNsearch blog, lots of cool info on the MSN search beta.
