Seeing as it’s Open Mike Friday, and Aaron is into
football, and football is the only thing I know something about, I think I’ll post about that.
There has been a lot of fuss lately over the Giants getting an extra home game, and I found this post by Aaron from not long after Katrina when the Saints’ season was being sorted out.
Yes, the Saints were being forced to play a game away from home, but just what were they supposed to do? Cancel the game? People are saying that they should have done it in San Antonio/Baton Rouge/etc., but they seem to forget how long it took the league to get things set up so that they could play their games there. Those stadiums simply weren’t ready for the game against the Giants.
If you care to take a look at the highlites (Real Player) of the game, you’ll notice it wasn’t even close. The Giants went up 14-0 in the first quarter, then put it on auto-pilot the rest of the game and won by 17.
Don’t try to tell me that home field advantage is enough to change the outcome of a game that was decided by 17 points, because it isn’t.
To be fair though, let’s imagine that the Saints won the game. Now they have a higher (in the round that is, a higher number, lower in the order.) draft pick, and might not snag as good a player. So that’s that. Let’s see how the Giants are doing. They are tied with the Redskins at 10-6 for first place in the NFC East. Uh oh, bring out the tiebreakers.
1. First step- head-to-head. Nope, Giants skunked them 36-0, then the Skins spanked them a few weeks ago.
2. Within the division- uh oh, the Reskins went 5-1, the Giants went 4-2.
I guess that settles it.
Or does it? Washington would be hosting Carolina, and the Giants would have the Bucs. Who is the better team of those two? Hard to say. The Giants would have the disadvantage of playing on the road for all their games, while the Redskins would get a home game, but the Redskins would have a heck of a harder time against Carolina. Their strength is in their defensive line and their blitzing. Gregg Williams is a genius (why else would they pay him millions a year to stay as their assistant coach?) when it comes to that. Their weakness is their corners.
You see, the strength of the Bucs is in their running game, and the Strength of the Panthers is their passing attack with Steve Smith and Jake Delhomme. The Redskins defense is built to stop teams exactly like Tampa Bay, not Carlina. One last factor is that in Tampa Bay you have a greener team. Chris Simms will almost certainly be good for a few picks, and Williams might not perform as well as usual. When the Redskins played the Bucs, they should have won the game. They put on a big lead at the end, but then carelessly let it slip, but still should have won except for a bad call in the replay booth on the two point conversion when Alstott’s knee was clearly down before he went over the goal line. Basically, the Redskins are going to play an opponent much better suited
to them than the Panthers would have been if they had won the division.
As it is, the Giants are favored by 2.5 and the Redskins are down 2.5. In other words, no one knows who is going to win either game.
So after all that, even assuming the Giants had played that game on the road and lost it, you could make a good argument that the Redskins are better off losing the division.
Disagree with me? Say so, but give a good argument.

Whatever, Daryl…
Daryl,About 99% of experts had the Colts winning. The Colts are the better team by far (this comes from an obsessed Steeler fan), they just didn’t play like themselves on Sunday, and the Steelers had their best game of the year. It happens. It doesn’t mean I suck (though it also doesn’t mean I don’t suck. I could be convinced)

Aaron,I would bet on that! for sure.Jesse,I can’t argue with your predictions even the scores are pretty good. I’m not sure the Panther/Seattle game is gonna get that high but they have no wind/precipitation to contend with so …. MAYBE! Low scoring I like Panthers…High scoring I like Seattle. I just don’t think Panthers have enough weapons to get into a shootout. For your prediction to come true Nick G has to have a very good game, I just can’t see it. Last year when he was used a bit, he had 5 of 8(approx) 100 yd games but this year he’s been used rarely. Tough spot!!!!I’m still sticking with Steelers / Seattle. I had Jurevicius as my third wide receiver in my fantasy pool so I’ve watched plenty of Seattle games. Although, I have a couple of football guys (Falcon and 49′er…;o) that picked Carolina to go all the way to the Superbowl before the playoffs began…. to lose of course in the big show, but at least make it! These are NFC guys so they know their stuff a little more then I…I’m AFC of course! ;o)The spreads…NFL Lines Conference Championships – NFL Line AFC & NFC Championship Games – NFL Playoff Games Date 1/22, 2006Date & Time Favorite NFL Line Underdog Total 1/22 3:00 ET At Denver -3 Pittsburgh 41 1/22 6:30 ET At Seattle -3.5 Carolina 43.5 So it’s Denver vs Seattle in the Superbowl according to the GURU’s! :O))))))

That’s how that works eh?!?!?! I’m not a spreads guy….That’s good info to know though. I had no idea 3pts is given to every home game. Although it does make sense.

Bettis at home, his first superbowl, his last game, it’s been ten yrs since the steelers lost to the Cowboys, Ben is on fire, all the guru’s have stated all year the AFC is the stronger division. There’s just too many things ringing in my head saying…Take the steeeeeelers, take the steeeelers -7!!!! OK its not saying bye 7 …LOL That’s just me wishful thinking. It should be a great game…..I’m pumped! Final Score: 24-17It was fun talking to you guys…..Ciao, Daryl

One last set of stat’s that I put together…Let me give you some STAT’s why the SEAHAWKS Lose….If you wanna cheat just read the last lines. The Seahawks play in a defensive weak division, bar none (Arizona, San Fran and St Louis) the weakest so all their stats are blown up exponentially. Here we go….the Seahawks have only played 6 games all year were they have played fairly good Defense…(NOT ELITE TOP 5 like Pittsburgh) (a)Jacksonville WK 1 = 26 – 14 L(a)Washington Wk 4 20 – 17 L(h)Dallas Wk 7 13 – 10 W(h)NYG Wk 11 24 – 21 W(h)Washington Playoff 20 – 10 W(h)Carolina Playoff 34 – 14 So they are 4 – 2 vs decent defenses (NOT ELITE like Pittsburgh)(6 games total all year), Pitt are 9 – 4 vs decent defenses(13 total). Seattle score an average of 20.333 pts/game against decent defensive teams. Pittsburgh has scored 29.333 pts/game. But more importantly against decent defensive teams on the road Seattle are 0 – 2. You can’t ignore that stat. Pittsburgh is 6 – 2 on the Road versus decent defensive teams. You be the judge, however, we all know stat’s don’t win games… ;o)I’m excited…It should be a hell of a weekend!
