SEO, Subscribers and the New SuicideFan 60-second podcast

To supplement my new Suicide Fan weekly podcast episode that is the mainstay and purpose of the Suicide Fan site, I’ve decided that I’m going to do a 5-day weekly mini-podcast. It begins tomorrow and recommend you subscribe to it as it will be quick and painless every day at 9am, Monday through Friday.

Let me explain why I’m doing this. Many of my readers here read me because they’ve discovered me through Problogger or Blog Herald. Readers of these sites, and by proxy many of my own readers are interested in successful blogging. They want to know how to build their blog effectively. They want to know how to drive traffic. They want to know how to optimize their blogs for search engines and get the most bang for their buck.

I’m no expert, but I learn from watching and I’ve been watching several people including Brian Clark very closely. Even the redesign of this website in August came out of learning and studying trends in traffic and subscriber stats and trying to maximize readership.

Though I haven’t really talked about my alterior motives behind Suicide Fan, I can safely disclose that the whole site is an experiment for me. It’s an opportuity for me to stretch my legs and put some of the tactics I’ve learned from others into practice. I may monetize it but the goal is not to make money. The goal is to drive traffic and really maximize loyal RSS subscribers.

Off Topic note: Whenever bloggers ask me how to make their blog successful, I always ask them to define for themself what success is. If it’s to make money, fine. If it’s to get readers, fine. If it’s to build a profile, fine. If it’s to keep in contact with family and friends, that’s fine too. Knowing what that goal is – something only the blogger can determine for himself – will define what steps are needed to reach that goal. Wandering goal-less is a way to feel lost, grasping at straws and mostly ineffective.

With that goal in mind, I recognized yesterday as I thought about the sports world, that a weekly podcast with basic blogging kind of content wouldn’t cut it. I may have listeners and a base that grows weekly, but it would not be effective in capitalizing on the rabid sports base that sits down every day and watches ESPN Sports Center in it’s entirety. That, truthfully, is my target audience. ESPN recognized that a weekly sports show wouldn’t cut it and that sports fan are hungry for a daily dose. I recognize that too.

Tomorrow morning I’ll be launching a daily (5 days) mini-podcast that is around 60 seconds in length. The purpose of this is to give listeners a daily dose but also to feed into the main event that will be held weekly. Every place readers/listeners go, they will be asked to subscribe to the site feed, or one of the individual podcast feeds or even a combined podcast feed.

It’s all an attempt to achieve The Goal(TM) – RSS subscribers. Lots of them. In fact, why don’t you subscribe right now?

Sixty seconds? I suppose that makes them easy to knock off, but how much meaningful stuff can you fit in a minute?

  5. Guess you’ll have to subscribe and listen, eh Jesse? ;)Besides, one topic per show – commentary style. Just have to be concise and hit the point. There’ll be a new show every morning – starting tomorrow. :)

I dedicated a lot of time to increase my RSS subscription rate, since mid November it increased by hundreds of percents. I guess another minute won’t hurt =)Allen.H
